Girls Inc. Friendly PEERsuasion® builds girls’ skills for resisting pressure to use harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, household chemicals, and other drugs. The two-part substance abuse prevention program teaches girls ages 11 to 14 healthy ways to manage stress and confront peer, media and other pressures. The girls then assume roles as PEERsuaders for younger girls.
GirlPower! is a two-part program which focuses on self-esteem, stress management, healthy relationships, and health & hygiene. The second part of the program focuses on anatomy & physiology, the menstrual cycle, and emotional & physical consequences of sexual relationships. This program is available with one or both of these parts. For information on GirlPower!, please contact Misty Gann at 817-275-2120, ext 229, or mgann@girlsinctarrant.org.
Girls Beyond Bullying: Female friendships can be among the most intense, meaningful and satisfying relationships for girls and young women. As girls explore their power, confidence, and self-esteem, they often use those relationships to inflict harm. Historically, this behavior has been ignored or rationalized as "girls being girls." Today, we recognize it as relational agression, otherwise known as mean girl behavior, and acknowledge its significant impact on girls' confidence and achievement. Girls Beyond Bullying teaches girls how to positively navigate social situations and overcome relational aggression.
The Operation SMART (Science, Math, and Relevant Technology) program exists to change girls' attitudes about science, math and relevant technology, as well as their attitudes about their role as a female in predominately male-oriented careers. The girls attend weekly Operation SMART meetings and discuss different topics in each of those fields. Additionally, they participate in hands-on activities that are geared toward increasing their knowledge and confidence in each area.
Girls Get the Message (Media Literacy): From magazines to marketing campaigns to music videos, girls today are bombarded with mass media images of girls and women. The media that girls are consuming contain strong messages that girls' worth is tied to their appearance. Girls Get the Message helps girls develop the critical thinking skills they need to wade through the myrid media messages they encounter.
Girls Inc. Economic Literacy® introduces girls as young as six to basic financial concepts, including money management and investments. The program explores how money affects us locally and globally as it fosters development of the skills needed to be financially self-sufficient. She’s on the Money!® is a program that provides girls with the skills and self-confidence they need to contribute to the economy and make decisions about their financial futures. Equally important, the program gives girls the opportunity to discuss equal pay for equal work, child-care, welfare, and other issues that particularly affect women and girls.
My Girlfriend Zelda is an introductory anatomy and physiology program for girls ages 8-11. The program serves two essential purposes: helping girls learn about their bodies and how to stay healthy, and acquainting girls with some of the roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals. The program presents the structure and function of six major body systems, introduces girls to basic surgical terminology, and facilitates interactive education about health and hygiene. Girls explore the major organ systems using a therapeutic teaching doll developed by healthcare professionals to help children learn about their bodies.
Community Youth Development (CYD) is a program which was created to prevent kids from the Northside of Fort Worth from dropping out of school. Programs offered in CYD are Friendly PEERsuasion, GirlPower!, and Economic & Media Literacy. To see if CYD is available in your zip code, please contact Myra Payen at 817-275-2120, ext. 224 or email mpayen@girlsinctarrant.org.
